Key Danger Signals of a Falling Roof:

Check the attic for leaks after a storm. Ice dams can also cause water to enter if your shingle underlayment is inadequate or if the flashing has deteriorated.

1. A leak in the attic

Peeling paint can be due to trapped moisture from high temperatures or humidity caused by inadequate attic ventilation. It's important to ensure proper airflow from the soffit to the ridge to lower humidity. Additionally, make sure areas like the kitchen and bathroom have vents, and dryer vents should lead outside.

2. Blistering or peeling interior or exterior paint

Stains or mold inside your home may result from faulty shingle underlayment letting water in. Inadequate ventilation can also create moisture conditions that promote mold and mildew growth.

3. Stains on interior ceilings and walls; mold or mildew growth

Inadequate attic ventilation can lead to excess moisture, contributing to decay. Placing a vapor barrier between the insulation and the interior of the house can help reduce moisture entering the walls and assist in moisture escape.

4. Exterior decay, sheathing, and/or sideng

If you see that your shingles are dry or practically break when touched, that means they have reached the end of their useful life and its time to invest in a new roof.

5. Missing, cracked, or curling shingles

Stains on your roof could be due to vegetation, fungus, mold, or algae growth, or loss of protective granules on the shingles. While this doesn't necessarily mean you need a new roof, it can impact your home's appearance. You can clean the shingles, but this might shorten their lifespan. Alternatively, GAF offers StainGuard protection on various shingle types, such as Timberline Cool Series, Timberline Natural Shadow, and Timberline ArmorShield II.

(StainGuard protection is available only on shingles with StainGuard-labeled packaging. See GAF Shingle & Accessory Ltd. Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.)

6. Dark, dirty-looking areas on your roof

A possible cause of higher cooling costs could be insufficient attic ventilation, requiring the cooling system to run excessively. In warm weather, inadequate ventilation will trap hot air in the attic, causing air-conditioning systems to work harder, or leaving your home's interior hotter and less comfortable.

In both hot and cold weather, moisture in the attic can become trapped and condense on the rafters if it's not insulated properly. This moisture can drip down onto the insulation and reduce its effectiveness, potentially increasing energy costs.

7. Excessive energy costs
