Natural slate is a classic roofing material that has been used on distinctive buildings for hundreds of years. Quarried in the northeastern United States and Canada, it is impermeable to water and extremely durable, even in the most extreme freeze-thaw cycles. A premium roofing material, slate roofs can be expected to last more than 75 years, often exceeding the life span of the buildings on which they"re installed.
A common misconception is that slate comes in just one color; the dark, charcoal or "slate gray". Actually, it is available in wide variety of colors, including black, gray, green, gray-green, mottled green, purple, mottled purple, and red. There are also semi-weathering and non-fading varieties. The shingles comes in various lengths and widths and thicknesses generally range from 3/16" to 1 1/2".
The visual impact of slate roof is dramatic. Architects and designers oven call for random color patterns and individual shingles of varying lengths and thickness, producing a natural look and a completely unique design for the roof. Natural variations in color also ensure that no two slate roofs will ever be identical.
